Congratulations Christina Berger, HSD Teacher of the Year

Christina with staff, with familyAt the heart of every exceptional elementary classroom is a teacher who understands that learning begins with belonging. For Christina Berger, that belief has guided a 21-year career rooted in service, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to children.

When Christina was 18, she had two dreams: to become a teacher or a NICU nurse. Though different professions, both were grounded in heart and service. Ultimately, her love for people drew her to education. Early in her career, a mentor gave her advice that would shape everything that followed: above all else, it was her responsibility to truly know her students.

She took that to heart.

In her first classroom, Christina quickly realized that many of her students were navigating challenges far beyond academics—foster care placements, family transitions, incarceration, and instability. She recognized that, for some children, school was their constant. In many cases, they spent more waking hours with her than with anyone else. That realization changed her approach forever. School was not just a place to learn; it was a place to belong.

When she looped with her class from second to third grade, her classroom became more than a roster of students, it became a family. Her phrase, “Once a 3B kid—always a 3B kid,” was more than a slogan. It was a promise. A promise that her students were hers not just for a year, but for years to come.

Two decades later, that commitment remains unchanged. Today, Christina begins most mornings with a powerful call-and-response affirmation inspired by educator Rita Pierson: “I am Somebody!” The message is clear and consistent—every child has value, every child has potential, and every child deserves to feel seen.

Her classroom reflects that philosophy. It is joyful, engaging, and deeply relational. Students feel safe to explore, ask questions, and take risks. Christina creates multiple pathways for understanding, ensuring that each learner feels capable and included. Her teaching methods do more than help students grasp concepts in the moment; they ignite curiosity, confidence, and a genuine love of learning.

Families see the difference. Parents speak of the lasting influence she has had on their children, students who continue to use the strategies and techniques she taught them years later. That kind of long-term impact is the mark of an educator who equips children not just for the next grade level, but for life.

Colleagues echo the same admiration. Having worked closely with her in a team-teaching model serving more than 50 students and their families, one colleague described having a “front row seat” to Christina’s talent and heart. She is smart, reflective, supportive, and deeply committed to her craft. She has served as a mentor teacher, sought out leadership opportunities, and earned the trust and respect of families and coworkers alike.

Even in recognition, her humility stands out. When nominated, her first thoughts were of her colleagues and the team effort required to sustain excellence in education. She understands that strong schools are built on collaboration, shared leadership, and mutual support.

Beyond her classroom walls, Christina’s impact extends throughout Liberty Elementary and the greater Harrisburg community. Through her leadership in the PTO, she has helped strengthen the bridge between families and school. Initiatives such as One Book, One School and Read-A-Thon have brought learners, families, and staff together around a shared love of literacy. These events do more than raise funds or promote reading, they build connection, pride, and community.

Her message to the public reflects the resilience and dedication of educators everywhere. Teachers endure shifting policies, evolving standards, and changing societal expectations, and they teach anyway. They give hugs and snacks, buy supplies, find winter gear, and then they teach. They invest hours planning, reflecting, creating meaningful experiences—and they teach. They welcome children who arrive tired, hungry, or carrying burdens beyond their years, and they love them anyway.

Christina believes that offering students the best six hours of their day is both a privilege and a responsibility. It requires digging deeper when energy feels low. It means practicing magic tricks to spark engagement, showing up at ball games to support students outside the classroom, and celebrating the small but powerful moments when a child finds their voice or takes a risk.

Her students function as a family, grounded in respect, kindness, and shared purpose. Her colleagues view her as a leader who advocates for learners and for the teaching profession. Families describe her as the kind of teacher every parent hopes their child will have—one who inspires, challenges, and supports in equal measure.

At the core of Christina Berger’s work is a simple but transformative belief: every child deserves to feel like somebody.

Through 21 years of dedication, heart, and unwavering presence, she has ensured that thousands of students know exactly that.
